POSEN, Ill. (WLS) -- An officer shot a man inside a home in south suburban Posen after he came at police with a large kitchen knife, Illinois State Police said.

Posen police responded to a call of a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 14400-block of Sherman Avenue around 2 a.m. Monday. The woman who called police was inside the home with her two children, ages 5 and 6.

State investigators said officers encountered a man armed with a large kitchen knife when they arrived. Police repeatedly told him to drop the knife. He allegedly came at the officers with the knife in hand and was shot.

"I was asleep. We were all sleeping and we heard the shots. That's all. It was just three 'bang bang bangs.' Loud," said Paul Prefontaine, who lives nearby.

The man was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn. His condition is unknown, state police said. The woman and her children were found safe inside.

Surprised neighbors said the people who live in the home never caused any trouble.

"They take care of their property very nicely. They're quiet and they're good neighbors," Paul Fortt said.

The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force is investigating the shooting.

Posen is about 21 miles south of Chicago.
