MANITOWOC, Wis. (WLS) -- A 24-year-old suburban Lisle man died Saturday during a fishing tournament in Manitowoc, Wis., officials said.

Max W. Boheme was a participant in the Great Lakes Kayak Fishing Series, according to the Manitowoc County Sheriff Department. The kayaking anglers were fishing for chinook salmon.

At about 2 p.m. during weigh-in, the man was the only participant to not check in, according to a Great Lakes Kayak Fishing Series statement on Facebook. The man's vehicle and boat trailer was still in the parking lot. Shortly afterwards, three people used a boat to search the waters for the missing man, along with the U.S. Coast Guard.

Shortly before 5 p.m., the Coast Guard found the man, unresponsive and several miles from harbor, tournament officials said. Sheriff officials said he was a quarter mile from Highway C in southern Manitowoc County.

He was not in his kayak, but wearing both a personal flotation device and an emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB).

A death investigation continues.
