Man accused of pointing gun at off-duty Chicago police officer in South Side gym

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A Chicago man is accused of point a gun at an off-duty Chicago police officer at a basketball game in a gym in Chicago's South Deering neighborhood on Saturday, police said.

The incident occurred in the Trumbull Park gym in the 2400-block of East 105th Street at 4 p.m. Saturday. Police said after Ivan Ayers pointed a weapon at the officer a struggle ensued and the off-duty officer fired a shot from his own weapon.

Ayers dropped his weapon and fled on foot, police said. He was taken into custody in the 10300-block of South Crandon Street.

The 28-year-old Ayers, of Chicago, has been charged with one count of aggravated assault of a peace officer with a weapon and unlawful use of a weapon.
