LA GRANGE, Ill. (WLS) -- A La Grange Highlands man is accused of using a hammer to smash 13 car windows at a west suburban preschool and day care on Monday.

Kirk Waishwell, 38, is facing several misdemeanor charges, including criminal damage to property and reckless conduct, Cook County sheriff's officials said. He has no affiliation with the school, officials said.

Sheriff's officials said they received a report of a man smashing vehicle windows in the parking lot of Kensington School around 12:30 p.m. Monday. Most of the vehicles that were damaged belonged to the school's staff.

Orquidia McCarthy said her car window was smashed as she was dropping off her 4-year-old son.

"I was going to get out and drop off my kid off inside, and I just saw this guy coming and he smacked my window. He was going to open the door of my daughter - she's 9 months old - and I just got really nervous and I just put it in on drive and I just left," McCarthy said.

Both Kensington School and nearby Highlands Schools were put on a soft lockdown while authorities caught the suspect.

No one was injured.
