Chicago police say a 27-year-old man was critically injured when he was shot multiple times by an off-duty Cook County Sheriff's deputy early Sunday.

The shooting took place outside the Funky Buddha Lounge at 827 W. Chicago Ave. around 3 a.m. Police say the victim was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Police say the officer was not at the club but was across the street and saw a man waving a handgun in a crowd across the street. Police say the officer approached and ordered him to drop the weapon. The man then pointed the gun at the officer, police said.

The officer fired his weapon, striking the offender, at which point a second offender grabbed the gun and fled, police said.
