CHICAGO (WLS) -- An investigation is underway after a man was fatally shot by Chicago police in the city's South Shore neighborhood, officials said.

The shooting occurred just before midnight Saturday near 74th Street and Merrill Avenue when police say officers on patrol in the area heard shots fired and saw a vehicle speeding away from the scene.

After a brief chase, the man in the car, identified as Jeffrey Kemp, got out and allegedly pointed a gun at the officers, police said.

"They order him to drop that weapon, the subject turns towards the officers and points that weapon at the officers," said Deputy Chief Dana Alexander, Chicago Police Department. "As a direct result of this offender's actions, the officer fired two shots, striking the offender."

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
