Man shot several times on NB I-57 near 115th Street

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 33-year-old man driving on northbound I-57 was shot several times near 115th Street around 1:40 a.m. Friday.

Illinois State Police said the victim pulled into a Shell gas station at 98th and Halsted and staggered up to the store to ask for help, leaving bloody footprints in his wake.

The clerk, who wishes to remain anonymous, said the man banged on the glass, begging him to open the front doors.

"I open door. I help him. He got three shots, bleeding very badly. I can see that and then I called police," the clerk said.

Surveillance video shows paramedics treated the victim inside the store before he was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he is listed in good condition.

The clerk said he could see the driver-side door of the man's minivan was riddled with bullets. The man told him he had been followed on the expressway.

"I was so scared at that time. I didn't know what to do. I was trying to keep myself safe," he said.

State police said the driver had been followed by three males in another vehicle from a gas station on 119th Street down the ramp to northbound I-57 and onto the expressway. Someone inside that vehicle opened fire on the victim's van before speeding away.

All lanes of northbound I-57 were shut down from 115th Street to 111th for about three hours early Friday morning as officers recovered shell casings from the pavement. All lanes reopened around 5 a.m.

Investigators are interviewing witnesses to figure out what sparked the shooting.
