CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicagoans took to the streets Friday night in an effort to stop the violence in their communities.

The smells of barbecue filled the air as kids played in the street in the city's McKinley Park neighborhood, where residents worked together with police officers to put on their fifth annual "Smoke Out Against Crime."

In Englewood a group of mothers who have made it their mission to keep the neighborhood safe, were out keeping watch again Friday night.

Many people credit the "Army of Moms" with helping to keep Englewood free from shootings over the Fourth of July weekend.
