CHICAGO (WLS) -- New data shows Cook County has the highest number of repeat DUI offenders.

Until now, those convicted of driving drunk four times or more had their license revoked for life. But a new law going into effect in January 2016 could allow those drivers get restricted permits if they prove they are drug and alcohol free for at least three years.

The Secretary of state Reports the Chicago area has the most DUI offenders. There are 1,600 offenders in Cook County while Lake and DuPage counties both have over 300 repeat offenders.
