New law installs more vehicle Breathalyzers for drunken drivers

A new Illinois law will force more convicted drunk drivers to have breath-test devices installed in their cars.

The law requires first-time offenders to get an ignition interlock device if they cause a serious injury while driving drunk.

Anyone convicted twice, even if no one is injured, will have to get the device installed no matter how many years it's been between convictions.

These devices require drivers to pass a breath test before they can start their vehicles.

The law goes into effect Jan. 1
