ATM Alert in Northbrook
Northbrook police are warning people to avoid using drive-up ATMs after dark following two recent robberies.

NORTHBROOK, Ill. (WLS) -- Northbrook police are warning people to avoid using drive-up ATMs after dark following two recent robberies.

Police say two would-be robbers - wearing hoodies and bandanas to cover their faces - have targeted drivers at ATMs twice.

"One approaches from the driver's side and the other suspect approaches from the passenger side of the vehicle. At which time they do attempt to get into the car," said Detective Sgt. Mark Graf, Northbrook Police Dept.

The last case happened at a Chase Bank near Dundee and Sanders Road on Thursday just before midnight.

"It's just a nice neighborhood, nice people and you just don't expect that out here," Sciarretta said.

Last month, the robbers targeted another Chase bank at Dundee and Pfingsten.

Police have seen similar cases in other suburbs, including Park Ridge, Carpentersville, Elgin, and Glen Ellyn.

"We are in contact with detectives from other departments, we are sharing information as well as working the case with them," Detective Sgt. Graf said.

Police warn when using an ATM, to leave your vehicle running, lock your doors, take someone else along, and leave immediately after you withdraw money.

"Just be aware of your surroundings and stuff now. It can happen anywhere," said Rene Carag, a Northbrook resident.
