NORTHFIELD, Ill. (WLS) -- Fire crews rescued a teenager who climbed a North Shore cellphone tower late Friday night, officials said.

Fire crews had to use extension ladders to reach him, and he was secured with a harness before being lowered safely back to the ground from the tower, which happened to be located behind the Northfield Fire Station, officials said.

The climber, 18, was taken to the hospital as a precaution. It is not clear why he decided to climb the 110-foot tower, and Northfield police are investigating.
