NW Indiana man dies after vehicle crashes into ditch

GARY, Ind. (WLS) -- A Northwest Indiana man died after his vehicle went into a ditch Friday night.

Police said just before midnight they received a report that a Honda went off the road on westbound I-80/94 at the Grant Street exit.

After arriving on the scene, Indiana State Troopers located the vehicle in a small water-filled ditch about 30 feet from the roadway.

The troopers entered the ditch, which was waist-deep, and discovered and unconscious man not breathing in the driver's seat.

The water was too deep to extricate the driver and the troopers performed CPR until Gary Fire and EMS personnel arrived.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and was identified to the Lake County (Ind.) Coroner as 57-year-old Nicholas S. Melegos of Merrillville, Ind.

According to a preliminary investigation, police said Melegos may have had a medical incident. There were no visible signs of trauma.
