CHICAGO (WLS) -- An officer shot a man involved in a fight on Chicago's North Side, police said.

Officers on routine patrol for the CTA were told of a "large fight" in the 1500-block of North Clybourn Avenue in the city's Goose Island neighborhood around 4 a.m. Monday.

Police said when they arrived at the scene, they found one man beating another with a baseball bat. An officer told him to stop. Police said when the man continued hitting the other in the head with the bat, the officer shot him.

A witness heard the gunfire from his home.

"Basically I was just sitting in my room and then all of the sudden I hear these gunshots. Then I look out my window and this guy was just booking it. It was pretty clear that there were gunshots and somebody was running. It wasn't like an exchange of gunfire or anything," said Sean, a witness.

The suspect was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he is listed in serious condition. The other man was also taken to the hospital. No police officers were injured.

A baseball bat was recovered at the scene. The shooting remains under investigation.
