OSWEGO, Ill. (WLS) -- Police are investigating after a threatening mass email was sent out to residents in suburban Oswego.

Police began receiving reports of the email around 7:25 a.m. Sunday after it was sent out to a Yahoo group of over 300 people. The email contained direct threats to residents of the Southbury Subdivision, police said. The subdivision also includes Southbury Elementary School.

However, the owner of the email account later said that it had been hacked, police said, and the Internet Protocol addresses associated with the messages were routed out of California and Amsterdam.

Police are continuing to investigate and said they have notified School District 308 officials.
