Police shoot, kill, man breaking into Lisle home, officials say

LISLE, Ill. (WLS) -- Police in the western suburbs shot and killed a man who was apparently trying to break into a house Saturday morning, officials said.

A 59-year-old woman living on the 4400-block of Yender Avenue in suburban Lisle called police, claiming that someone was trying to force their way into the home around 5:15 a.m. Saturday.

The woman, who lives in the home alone, was awakened by loud footsteps on her front porch. She said the man "began to violently kick (the) front door, attempting to break it down." He then moved to the back of the house and kicked the back door, police said.

The woman barricaded herself in the bathroom while waiting for officers to arrive, police said.

Two police officers arrived on scene at 5:16 a.m. and found the man armed with a weapon. One officer used a Taser-like weapon on the man, which had no effect, and the other officer shot the man, police said.

The man was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove where he later died, police said.

The woman was not injured, and three officers were treated and released from Edward Hospital in Naperville.

The Lisle Police Department contacted the Illinois State Police investigations unit to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. This is an ongoing investigation in conjunction with the DuPage County State's Attorney's Officer and the DuPage County Coroner's Office, police said.
