Wauconda police are searching for three suspects in a shooting at an apartment in the northwest suburb, where a 26-year-old man was injured.

Authorities said Monday the shooting stemmed from a fight between the three suspects and the victim. Three Hispanic men in their twenties knocked on the door to the apartment at 105 South Main Street around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, according to police.

The victim lived at the home with his girlfriend and her three children, ages 14, 10 and 7, according to police. One of the children answered the door and the men entered the apartment.

Police said they began to argue with the victim, one of the suspects pulled a gun and shot the 26-year-old man in the chest. The three suspects ran out of the apartment and drove west in a dark-colored sedan, according to police.

The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he is listed in stable condition. Investigators are trying to uncover a motive, but said Monday it is unlikely that the shooting was a random act of violence.

"There's no reason to believe, at this point, as far as we know that this was a random kind of thing. We do believe that the victim likely knew the offenders," Wauconda Police Chief Patrick Yost said.

Police hope to get a better description of the suspects from the victim on Monday. His identity is not being revealed because the suspects are still at large.
