CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy will travel to New York to attend the funerals of two officers who were killed in the line of duty there.

Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were fatally shot Dec. 20 while sitting in their squad car. The suspect in the shooting, 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley of Georgia, died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Funerals for both officers will be held Saturday.

McCarthy is also allowing Chicago police officers to wear black mourning bands on their badges if they choose. The thin black bands go over an officer's police star number.
