Proposal seeks to reduce Chicago vehicle sticker fees

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A proposal to slash fees on Chicago's city vehicle stickers was introduced Wednesday to the City Council by City Clerk Susana Mendoza.

The plan would provide a $25 cut for the cost of replacing a lost, stolen or damaged sicker, from $30 to $5.

Transferring a sticker from vehicle to vehicle would be $5, instead of $20, and changing residential zones would be only $5, under the proposal.

The City Council has not yet been approved the plan.

It has been to goal of Clerk's Office's to "right size" the fees charged to reflect the actual level of labor involved in providing vehicle sticker services, Mendoza said.

"We shouldn't be punishing people who are victims of vandalism or a car accidents by hitting them with a $30.00 fee for a product that cost a fraction of that to produce," said Mendoza. "A person who is moving to a different residential zone or a person or purchases and new car have just spent a lot of money. We shouldn't be squeezing them for a few extra dollars."
