CHICAGO (WLS) -- Thursday marks one year since Chicago police released the video of the Laquan McDonald shooting.

McDonald was shot 16 times by Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke on October 24, 2014. Van Dyke is now charged with six counts of first-degree murder. The video showing the shooting was released on Nov. 24, 2015.

The release sparked days of mass protests in Chicago. It also led to some major changes in the city, such as the ousting of former Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez and former Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy.

The mayor and Chicago Police Department have also been working to increase transparency since the Laquan McDonald video and videos showing other police shootings have been released.
