MAYWOOD, Ill. (WLS) -- Strong winds from storms brought a tree down onto the roof of a house in west suburban Maywood Tuesday.

Michelle Eiland, who lives in the home with her elderly grandparents, said she is thankful nobody was hurt - though the tree left heavy damage to the home's roof and yard.

Eiland said the storm left so much debris that firefighters had to clear branches and leaves to form a path to the home's front door.

"We heard a big boom," she said. "I didn't even make it out here, I stopped right there because the water was coming in. And once I realized the roof is open, I realized what it was. I called 911."

Debris also fell on the porch where her grandfather was sitting just moments before the tree came down.

Eiland and her grandparents are now staying with her mother, and the family is waiting on insurance adjusters to assess the damage and commission a clean-up crew.

The impact of the storm was far more wide-reaching along a stretch of the Eisenhower Expressway at the 25th Avenue viaduct. A clogged interior drain caused the highway to flood and shut it down in both directions for several hours overnight. The water has drained and the highway reopened before Wednesday's morning commute, but officials are conducting an inspection of the area that will close down portions of the area Wednesday afternoon.

Tuesday's storms also spawned funnel clouds in parts of Cook and DuPage counties. Although the clouds disappeared after a few seconds and did not become tornadoes, sirens were activated in Oak Brook and Hinsdale.
