Safe trick-or-treating reminders amid Halloween fun

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Many families are getting their costumes ready for Halloween weekend, but you may want to do some research before you send your child trick-or-treating Saturday.

A party Friday at the Chicago Park District's Women's Park and Gardens Center served as a warm-up for some trick-or-treaters. The kids are focused on the fun, showing off their costumes with a Halloween parade.

The center's director urges parents to do a reality check with costumes.

"Making sure they're warm enough in their costumes and that they're safe with what's over their heads, what's covering their eyes, make sure they can hear - all things that we stress with our kids," said Sarah Unz, Chicago Park District.

Before kids go out, parents may also do some research, as local officials are reminding parents about the Illinois Sex Offender Registry.

Anyone can see if registered child sex offenders live in their area by going online and typing in their address. There are more than 22,000 child sex offenders in the state.

Chicago police also suggest taking advantage of this unique Halloween on a Saturday and go out earlier.

"It's great to get out there early, get the candy first before everyone else gets there, but of course, we do encourage people to try to do things during daylight hours, and if for any reason you're going to be doing anything outdoors in the evening, wear light-colored clothing," said Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti, Chicago Police Department.

There are also other events going on throughout the city that offer alternatives to traditional trick-or-treating, such as a party and faux pumpkin patch at Maggie Daley Park on Friday and Saturday.
