CHICAGO (WLS) -- Extreme cold weather had commuters hurrying inside Wednesday morning, but community activist Andrew Holmes spent Tuesday night outside to raise awareness of those who have nowhere to go.

Holmes slept outside without a tent near Roosevelt Road and South Des Plaines Street to raise awareness of homelessness in Chicago and to encourage elected officials to help homeless Chicagoans during cold weather.

The city has opened warming centers. Officials urge anyone who needs help to call 311.
