Calls for gun control, Broward County Sheriff's resignation increase after Fla. school shooting

Alumni of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School marched Sunday in honor of the 17 victims of the shooting that took place at the school February 14.

The last victim, 14-year-old Martin Anguiano, was also laid to rest Sunday. Sunday afternoon, students and parents returned to the school for a voluntary orientation before classes resume Wednesday.

The Broward County, Fla. Sheriff, Scott Israel, is facing pressure to resign over repeated failures to investigate the alleged shooter's troubling behavior and the failure of the school resource officer to intervene in the shooting.

The Speaker of Florida's House of Representatives sent a letter to Florida Governor Rick Scott requesting Israel's suspension for incompetence and dereliction of duty. 73 Republican lawmakers signed the letter.

In New Jersey, Parkland student survivors addressed a community rally for gun control.

"I do not know what God I can trust that will allow this to happen time and time again," said Parkland survivor Ryan Deitsch.

The National Rifle Association continued to resist calls to ban assault rifles or outlaw bump stocks. NRA National Spokesperson Dana Loesch said that her organization does not support any bans.

"She is serving the gun manufacturers," said Parkland survivor David Hogg. "She's not serving the people of the NRA, because the people that are joining the NRA, 99.9 percent of them, are amazing people that just want to be safe, responsible gun owners."

Congress is likely to pick up the gun debate Monday when it returns from a 10-day recess.
