CHICAGO (WLS) -- A new memorial has been created for a Chicago police officer who was murdered by her abusive boyfriend.

The city dedicated the Brenda Sexton Garden Thursday. The dedication comes during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The garden sits on the grounds at the city's newest domestic violence shelter in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood.

Sam Lupo plead guilty to killing Sexton in August of 2000.
