SEATTLE (WLS) -- The Seattle City Council announced it changed the name of Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day.

They city council renamed the day to celebrate the culture of Native Americans and other indigenous communities.

While some feel it's not right to honor Christopher Columbus, opponents say they're missing the point.

Beyond the city- and state-wide initiatives, there's also a federal petition on the White House's "We The People" site. That petition advocates changing the name of the holiday on a national level.
