For the first time since the team's inception in 1993, the Miami Marlins will host the MLB All-Star Game, according to a report by the Miami Herald.
Marlins Park will host the 2017 Midsummer Classic, following Cincinnati as this year's host and San Diego as the 2016 host city.
The Marlins had been scheduled to host the 2000 All-Star Game, but following the team's post-World Series fire sale of 1997, MLB stripped South Florida of the midseason showcase and awarded it to Atlanta.
First-year commissioner Rob Manfred has said in the future he hopes to establish a bidding process for All-Star Game hosts, however outgoing commissioner Bud Selig had stated that certain promises had already been made to franchises that had recently opened new ballparks.
Marlins Park opened in 2012, prior to that the team had shared residence at Pro Player Stadium with the NFL's Miami Dolphins.
The Washington Nationals were believed to also be in the running to host the 2017 event.
