Sporting KC score quickly in win over Chicago

Sporting Kansas City scored the fastest two goals in club history and then made the cushion last as they defeated the visiting Chicago Fire 2-0 Saturday night.

Rookie Jose Mauri scored in the fourth minute and the second was scored by veteran Johnny Russell in the sixth minute.

Sporting controlled the pace, especially in the second half, and ended with 61 percent of the possession.

Chicago had chances to score late but couldn't convert. They missed three attempts in the final 10 minutes, six in the final 15 minutes. They hit the crossbar twice in the second half and had another point-blank attempt sail wide.

Sporting KC (12-4-6, 42 points), which avenged a 4-0 loss in its last match, is now 14-0-0 in the last 14 matches when scoring at least two goals.

Sporting moved into second place in the Western Conference table.

Chicago (6-12-5, 23 points) took a big hit in their fading playoff hopes. The Fire are in 12th place. Chicago head coach Raphael Wicky is 1-14-6 all-time on the road.

Sporting KC scored in the fourth minute when Mauri scored his first MLS goal. Mauri picked up a loose ball outside the box and fired a shot that rolled through the legs of Chicago keeper Bobby Shuttleworth.

Two minutes later, Daniel Salloi broke loose from the defense and fired a shot at Shuttleworth. He deflected it but right to the feet of Russell who tapped it in for a 2-0 lead less than 6 minutes in, setting the club mark.

Sporting almost went up 3-0 when Alan Pulido's attempt hit the post and caromed harmlessly away late in the first half.

Luka Stojanovic missed a chance to cut into the lead in the 58th minute when his attempt from close range hit the crossbar.
