LOS ANGELES -- A suspect was shot after three people were stabbed at a Target store in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday evening, police say.

The stabbing attack reportedly happened just after 6:20 p.m. at the Target store located at the popular shopping complex at Figueroa and 7th streets.

Several police vehicles responded and crime-scene tape cordoned off the area for an investigation. Multiple ambulances were also at the scene.

The Loss Angeles Police Department said a homeless man walked into the Target, grabbed a knife off the shelf and stabbed a 7-year-old boy and a 25-year-old woman.

The boy was stabbed in the shoulder, and the woman was stabbed in the chest. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment; police did not give a condition for either victim.

Police said a third woman tried to intervene in the situation and the suspect punched her in the face. Police said she was treated at the scene and released.

A security guard approached the suspect and fired one round. The suspect was taken into custody and is in stable condition.

There was reportedly a search through the building for more possible victims. Customers and employees sheltered in place.
