CHICAGO (WLS) -- A tow truck driver died after being shot on the job near the Chicago Skyway just before 9 a.m. Thursday.

The driver, identified as 32-year-old Lutredze Evans, was shot several times then crashed his tow truck near 68th and King Drive.

It appears the incident began about a block away, where police say Evans was going north on Anthony Avenue in the Park Manor neighborhood when someone fired on his vehicle. He ended up pinned in the truck after his truck ran into a viaduct.

"It's tragic, you know. He got two kids. This ain't supposed to happen," said Dehon Moten, an employee.

His friends and co-workers called him "Baldy." They said he co-owned a towing company that was just blocks away.

"Last night actually he came by the shop, and I was supposed to come and finish up the job by finishing his fence. And they just told me a few minutes ago what happened," said Howell Caldwell.

After the crash, police discovered Evans had been shot multiple times in the chest and arms.

"That's terrible. I don't know any of the details, but he was too nice of a guy for anything like that to happen to him. Yeah, I really hate to hear that," Caldwell said.

"A good, kind person. Funny, loving. He helped everybody that needed help. If you needed help, he was going to help you," Moten said.

Police are still looking for a motive and suspect in this case.
