Major crash on US 421 in LaPorte Co. injures 5

WESTVILLE, Ind. (WLS) -- Five people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on US 421 near Alida Road in Westville, Ind., the La Porte County Sheriff's Office says.

Police say the crash occurred around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, about half a mile south of US 6.

Police say a maroon Ford Expedition driven by a 44-year-old man from Wanatah, Ind. was traveling north on US 421 when it collided with a southbound maroon Chevrolet truck carrying a 43-year-old man, 40-year old man, 17-year-old girl and 10-year-old boy, all from Valparaiso, Ind. The cause of the crash is not currently known. Investigators from the Sheriff's Office remain on the scene.

Three victims, aged 43, 40 and 10 years old, were flown by medical helicopter in critical condition. The two other victims were taken by ambulance to area hospitals.

US 421 from US 6 and US 30 remains closed as the investigation continues. The road is expected to open at approximately 11 a.m. Drivers should avoid the area.
