CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Ohio and Ontario Street feeder ramps were closed for at least an hour overnight after multiple crashes on black ice near the Kennedy Expressway (I-90).

A few flurries, freezing temperatures and just enough moisture in the air cause slick conditions on bridges and overpasses around 11:30 p.m. Thursday. The slippery conditions took many drivers by surprise.

"I hit an ice slick traveling 40 miles an hour. Traffic was going slow. I tried to avoid hitting other cars. I ended up hitting the wall," Sam Robinson said.

At least ten crashes were reported on the Kennedy from downtown to Armitage Avenue. No one was seriously hurt and no one was taken to the hospital.

Although driving conditions returned to normal by early Friday morning, the Illinois Department of Transportation encourages motorists to be mindful of the effect weather can have on the roads, especially in the winter.

IDOT also said to expect a higher volume of traffic during the holiday travel period, thanks to an improving economy and lower gas prices. AAA expects 99 million Americans to travel 50 miles or more during the holiday travel period. That's the highest number on record, which dates back to 2001.
