What's Driving You Crazy? Construction during Memorial Day travel

CHICAGO (WLS) -- With so many people driving over Memorial Day weekend, I wanted to help folks avoid the frustration of getting stuck in those construction delays by pointing out some of the bigger projects, not just in Illinois, but in the bordering states.

The first challenge this weekend is getting out of the Chicago area. We know about the reconstruction at the Jane Byrne Interchange, the ongoing road work at the Stevenson and lake shore drive and the resurfacing of I-55 in DuPage and will counties. But if you're driving through Illinois be aware of these construction zones. Several miles along I-55 either side of Springfield, I-57 roadwork in and around Champaign-Urbana, and several miles of repairs on I-74 west of Peoria.

Heading to Wisconsin? The 1-39/90 expansion project is just getting underway. It's a multi-year project covering 45 miles of I-90 from the Illinois state line to Madison.

Lots of roadwork in Indiana, starting with I-94 from just east of the Illinois border, in sections, most of the way to the Michigan state line. The Indiana toll road is under construction from lake station to Elkhart, and the I-65 expansion projects from U.S. 30 to state road 2 is expected to get started right after Memorial Day, on or after June 1.

Once you get through Indiana, driving through Michigan could be challenging with road work on several stretches of i-94, including Benton Harbor/St. Joe's, Watervliet, lane shifts in Paw Paw and single lane closures in the Kalamazoo area.

The good thing is most ongoing projects will not have additional overnight or off-peak lane closures during the long holiday weekend.

Try to be strategic when planning the times you'll be on the road. The worst times are Friday afternoon and Monday late afternoon/early evening. We've got links to all the border states' DOTs so you can get more details on various construction projects.
