Chicago weather: Snow moves through, snarls travel
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Heavy snowfall descended on the Chicago area Sunday afternoon, causing problems for drivers and air travelers on Valentine's Day.
Between 2-4 inches of snow is expected to fall in total on Sunday. By later Sunday and early Monday, most of us will see 2-3 inches with the most falling southwest of Chicago.
At 9 p.m., O'Hare International Airport canceled 270 flights and averaged 90-minute delays. Midway International Airport canceled 60 flights and had 15-minute delays.
Illinois Department of Transportation said they have dispatched 350-375 trucks in response to the snow, and will keep trucks out all night and into Monday morning.
However, traffic was snarled on local expressways because of the slick roads. An crash in Lincolnwood sent one person to the hospital.
Many people were on the road because of the Valentine's Day holiday.
"I'm taking my girlfriend out. I didn't want to go out, but I have to make her happy," one driver said.
Weather may have caused a fiery crash on the Kennedy Expressway under the Cumberland overpass. Service on the CTA Blue Line was disrupted briefly. No report of injuries.
Monday will not be as cold and snow is expected.
Another 1-3 inches of snow is expected Tuesday, but the winter weather won't stick around for long. A warm-up is expected later in the week, with temperatures reaching 50 by Friday.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until midnight for the following counties in Illinois: Boone, DeKalb, Ford, Grundy, Iroquois, Kendall, La Salle, Lee, Livingston, Ogle and Winnebago.
