CHICAGO (WLS) -- It may look like fall, but it's going to feel a bit more like winter as frosty conditions move into the Chicago area this weekend. A freeze warning is in effect until 9 a.m. Saturday.

WATCH: ABC7 First Alert Forecast

Highs in the 50s Friday afternoon will dip overnight, first into the 40s and 30s throughout the area and then eventually below freezing in some places as skies clear and winds diminish. Frosty conditions are expected both Saturday and Sunday morning, though mostly sunny skies and highs in the 50s are in the weekend forecast.

"One reason that this freeze may seem so sudden is because we've been warm so far this autumn," says Matt Friedlein of the National Weather Service. "September was mild, over four degrees above normal, October so far has had some warm days, close to 80 a couple times, so this freeze is somewhat sudden, can feel somewhat sudden."

The colder temperatures are cause for some concern, as they could kill crops and sensitive vegetation. Village Flower and Garden owner Marshall Rogers says certain kinds of plants are vulnerable to the 25 to 30 degree temperatures anticipated overnight.

"I think your garden mums should be fine. Your marigolds, your geraniums, your salvias, your colious... history," Rogers says.

Despite this abrupt cool-down, temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-60s and lower 70s again by early next week.
