Jazzalyn Fontanez, 22, killed in apparent hit-and-run in Englewood

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A pregnant mother was struck and killed in an apparent hit-and-run crash Thursday afternoon in Englewood.

Police said the 22-year-old woman was struck around 1:45 p.m. Thursday near 61st and Halsted. She was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, but her family said she died of her injuries.

The victim's family identified her as Jazzalyn Fontanez, 22. They said she was five months pregnant and also leaves behind a 5-year-old son.

"I just ask the Lord to keep us in strength, to get through this loss, to get through this tragedy. It's real hurtful. Just think about it, she's not here no longer because of some speeding driver," said Angel Velez, victim's uncle.

The victim was apparently walking to a laundromat when she was struck. The impact of the crash threw her about half a block, and was so powerful that it knocked her shoes off.

She was apparently carrying laundry at the time. The collision left clothing, shoes and other personal items were strewn across Halsted.

"I mean, it's something out of a film. I'm not going to lie to you. And the fact that somebody just drove off, it just goes to show, it's messed up," said Imron Hussain, a witness.

ABC7 obtained surveillance video that shows the woman on foot just before she as hit. Witnesses said the driver kept going.

"It slowed down after he hit her, but then he just gunned it past me," Hussain said.

The driver would eventually stop, but not for almost a mile. The car, a dark-colored Mercury sedan, sustained front-end damage. Police arrested the driver near 53rd and Union.

"I can't believe that someone even has that kind of thinking that ok, I hit someone, but I'm still going to go," said Naveed Saddiqui, a witness.
