Chicago architect-in-training wins WWI Memorial design contest

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The design "The Weight of Sacrifice" by Chicago architect-in-training Joseph Weishaar has been selected for the national World War I memorial in Washington, D.C.

"We were thrilled by the quality and creativity by all the submissions in this competition" stated Commissioner Edwin Fountain, who directed the competition. "This selected design concept reflects a high level of professional achievement".

Weishaar is 25 years old and is the only architect-in-training in the group of five finalists. He created the winning design on his own time as an intern at another firm.

"The Weight of Sacrifice" will have a raised lawn, surrounded by three bronze walls which will feature various scenes in relief or sculptures designed by New York City sculptor Sabin Howard. Visitors will be able to touch the artwork.

Weishaar's team includes Baltimore architectural firm GWWO, Inc., landscape architect Phoebe Lickwar and engineering consultants Henry Adams, LLC., Keast & Hood and VBH.

The memorial will be built in Pershing Park in downtown Washington, D.C., one block from the White House and adjacent to the Willard Hotel and Wilson Building.
