The 68-year-old woman was crossing the street when police said she was struck, police said. The victim was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said. She was identified as Jiekun Xu.

The pick-up truck, believed to be a Ford F150 or a RAM 1500, fled northbound on Pulaski Road.

Xu's daughter said her mother had just applied for citizenship last week after living in the U.S. for five years.

"Life cannot go back. Nothing can go back," said daughter Lihua Zhang, who was too upset to appear on camera. "She is a very good person. Nobody can believe it."

Zhang said a neighbor who had been walking with her mother at the time of the crash was the one who called her to tell her about the incident.

"The traffic there is very busy. Sometimes crazy," she said.
Zhang is now demanding action from the city, hoping red light cameras can be installed to catch drivers who dangerously try to beat the light.

"Almost every day, I see people rush the red light. Almost every day," she said. "We see accidents maybe once, twice a week."

Fourteenth Ward Alderperson Jeylú Gutiérrez released a statement after the crash, writing in part, "It is disheartening to learn from CDOT data spanning 2018 to 2022 that there have been approximately 23 serious injury crashes and 2 fatal crashes on Pulaski Road between 42nd and 47th Streets. These statistics underscore the gravity of the situation, indicating an immediate need for action."

Unit there is action, Xu's family wants justice for the driver to turn themselves in.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the CPD Major Accident Investigation Unit at (312) 745-4521. Chicago police said no one is currently in custody.
