The shooting occurred at about 5:22 a.m. in the 500-block of East 38th Place, Chicago police said.

The 40-year-old man was inside a residence when three suspects were attempting to break into an unoccupied car parked outside.
After going outside, a suspect fired at the victim, who was wounded multiple times, police said.
CFD said the victim is an off-duty firefighter and he was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition.

Two suspects fled the scene inside a silver SUV and a third fled on foot, police said.
A neighbor who did not want to be identified said, "I just heard about five gunshots...four to five gunshots...We just want to be safe. We just want to be safe. Like I said, two to three years ago, it wasn't like that. We used to feel safe, you know?"
No one is in custody and Area One detectives are investigating.
