Police said the man was inside of the rideshare car when someone walked up and opened fire before running off.
The rideshare driver drove the victim to Rush University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
A local anti-violence advocate, Pastor Corey Brooks, said it was his administrative assistant's son who was killed.
"Today, we are not just an organization; we are a family mourning the loss of a young life taken far too soon," Brooks said, in part.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified him as Jeleal Goins.

Denise Bryant lives nearby.
"I knew it was shots. I was in my bedroom and I ran behind the wall, because bullets don't have eyes," Bryant said. "It's scary. We should be able to walk and get something to eat, walk to get the newspaper. Stuff is happening everywhere, but something's definitely needs to be done about the crime."
Brooks said the pain they feel right now is indescribable, and is asking people to pray for the family.
No one is in custody and Area Three detectives are investigating.
