DIXMOOR, Ill. (WLS) -- Crews are working to get water pressure restored in south suburban Dixmoor after residents there went most of the day Saturday and at least half of Sunday without water.

The drop in pressure essentially cut off service.

A spokesperson for Dixmoor said a water main break was found Sunday morning, and village officials were going out to look at it.

Village officials said the pipe break was fixed Sunday afternoon, but are still waiting for the pressure to build back up, according to Dixmoor Village President Fitzgerald Roberts. Roberts added that full water pressure won't return until the turbines are fixed.

"We can report that we found the break which occurred in Harvey and the break has been repaired," Roberts said. "Right now, we are waiting for the pressure to build back up, but we won't have full pressure until the turbines we use to add water pressure are repaired. We will have engineers on site tomorrow to diagnose the problems with the turbines."

The Village Board recently declared a state of emergency because of ongoing water problems.

"We are asking that our residents be a little patient with it because we're working hard as we can work," Roberts said.

Water pressure levels need to be in the range of 35-36 pounds of pressure per square inch to service the Village, officials said, adding that pressure levels had fallen to single digits at various times throughout the water crisis.

Water continues to be distributed at Village Hall, especially to seniors or people with disabilities.

"If you need water, come to Village Hall and we will get you some water," Roberts said. "We also will bring water to those who can't get out. All they have to do is call Village Hall."

The city of Harvey provides Dixmoor's water.
