There is a crisis involving large dogs. Shelters are full, and not enough people are coming forward to foster or adopt.

Some pet shelters in our area are joining forces, forming the Chicagoland Humane Coalition, and launching the "Chicago dog" campaign.
"Chicago dogs are any dogs 40 pounds or greater that lives in the Chicagoland area," said Laura Flamion, of DuPage County Animal Services. "These tend to be more of our bully breeds, our pitbull terriers, large shepherd mixes."
"We have been working for months on a campaign to celebrate and really get these dogs out into the public sphere, that they're up for adoption, for foster and for people to become advocates for these dogs," said Lydia Krupinski of the Anti-cruelty society.
Large dogs seek forever homes in Chicago area
Krupinski said these big dogs are just as loving as other breeds.
"These are dogs that love to go for walks or through forest, who love to play and are just very social," Lydia said
While big dogs make great pets, it's hard for many to get adopted.
"They don't always show their best when in confined spaces," Krupinski said. "That's why there's this huge sense of urgency to find them homes as quickly as we can."
People can help by fostering, adopting or spreading the word about the Chicagoland Human Coalition
