South Side church gives away food baskets, winter coats, toys this holiday season

CHICAGO (WLS) -- It's day two of a massive effort by a South Side church to bless people in need this holiday season with food baskets, winter coats and toys.

Since Tuesday, volunteers like Talia Henderson and members of Apostolic Faith Church have been handing out groceries to those in need, as they try to spread some holiday cheer.

"This is one of the things in my community. And it's so important to give back because we get so many things in life and other people don't," Henderson said.

The 20-year-old college student was among those present as the Chicago church hosted its annual Christmas toy, coat and food giveaway.

"It means a lot. I come every year. God is good," Joel Jackson said.

On Wednesday morning, hundreds converged on the church, located at 38th Street and Indiana Avenue in Bronzeville, for the event that has been going on for decades.

Executive Pastor Jonathan Banks says the church has seen an increase in the number of people who need help.

"This is a community effort. We're seeing God's love flourish and partnerships. But at the core of it is making sure that the needs of our community and our children are met," Banks said.

Wednesday's offering was free to anyone living within the four neighborhood zip codes the church has pledged to help.

Many already benefit from the church's food pantry, but learned about the giveaway through social media and word of mouth.

"Very nice everybody, I like it, nice for old people," Carol Loauyung said.

Loauyung was among the estimated 150 people who received food baskets Wednesday.

"We enjoy it. We enjoy the diversity of the people that come. Our job is to make people happy and to make sure they have a better experience because the lines are long," Diamond Carter said.

Each food basket includes the choice of a ham or turkey along with a variety of fresh vegetables, some grocery staples and dinner sides.

"We have corn. We have gravy. We have the croutons and make up the stuffing. We have peas, everything that you need for Christmas," Odessa Morris said.

This latest giveaway follows the church's Angel Tree Partnership, which benefits the children of incarcerated parents.

The week of giving ends with Apostolic handing out more than 1,200 new winter coats for men, women and children, along with 3,000 toys for kids and teens.

While the food distribution ends Wednesday, winter coats and toys will be handed out Thursday and Friday.
