The family was at a gas station in the 600 block of South Independence Boulevard on the West Side, earlier this month when a group of four masked men robbed them of jewelry and other belongings, and tried to take their car.
A woman, who is a mother and a wife, spoke to ABC7 about what happened and asked to hide her face. She said it was a terrifying situation.
She said her husband had just paid for gas as the family waited in the car. The robbery and attempted carjacking was partially caught on surveillance camera.
"As he tries to get back in the car, four armed individuals run towards him, trying to pull his chain," she said.
She says her husband tried to protect the family, including their 6-year-old son and newborn.
"They got their guns at hand, you know, they're telling him, 'gimme your chains, give me everything, or I'm gonna kill you in front of your family,'" she said. "Their guns are to his neck... my kids screaming."
She said the robbers fired one shot and her husband was grazed by a bullet. No one was seriously hurt, but her young son is still traumatized.
"He witnessed everything. He was in front seat," she said. "Terrifying situation."

Their carjacking attempt was not successful, but they did get away, police said.
No arrests have been made as Chicago police continue to investigate.
