CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago's two baseball teams faced off on Friday in the first Crosstown Classic of the season.

The Cubs ended up beating the White Sox with a final score of 13-3.

The game came after a man was shot just steps from Wrigley Field on Thursday night.

Investigators said it was just before 7 p.m. Thursday when shots were fired near the corner of Waveland and Sheffield.

Investigators said a 26-year-old man was shot in the arm. He was expected to be okay.

The motive for the shooting still unknown. Witnesses said the gunfire was between two groups of young men.

A person of interest was taken into custody but was later released, police said. A weapon was also recovered on scene.

A woman said she was horrified after witnessing the shooting right outside Murphy's Bleachers.

"Hopefully no one ever has to experience that again. It was absolutely horrifying," Allyson Jefferson said.

Jefferson said she is grateful to be walking her dog outside Wrigley Field. She said she was sitting down for dinner with her boyfriend when the shooting happened.

"We had just sat down for dinner and were waiting on our food and all of a sudden we heard what I thought was potentially fireworks," Jefferson said. "Right outside, 15 gunshots had gone off in the street."

Jefferson said they ultimately ran and hid in the bar and restaurant's office on the second floor.

"We were sitting in the window we got up and ran behind this brick wall that was immediately to my back so we hid there for a second and someone said to run upstairs," Jefferson said. "I was so horrified I was crying. I actually ended up getting sick in the office because I was so scared."

CPD squad cars rushed into the area and surrounding streets were shut down. One woman said she was shocked to see that kind of scene in her neighborhood.

"It feels a little icky because it seems scary to know there was open fire in an area that we all walk around in on a regular basis, but I'm confident everyone's securing the area," she said.

Fans share concerns ahead of Crosstown Classic after shooting near Wrigley

The incident came as the North Side prepared to take on another Crosstown Classic, with fans of both teams packing Wrigleyville Friday.

With an amplified police presence in the area, fans said they were not too concerned about their safety.

"It was an aberration there's too many eyes out here, that's how I look at it, so I think we'll be fine," Cubs fan Mike Callahan said.

The news of Chicago-born Pope Leo XIV has maybe been making everyone a little too friendly at Wrigley as it feels like fans of both teams are just happy to be there on what was a beautiful sunny day in Wrigleyville.

There just aren't many atmospheres that compare to a Friday afternoon in Wrigleyville.

"I think the North Side's got it this year," Cubs fan Tim Fessler.

The atmosphere was taken to another level Friday with another Crosstown Classic rivalry game.

"Do I want them to be good? Yeah, but as long as we beat the Cubs, we get to take over Chicago," White Sox fan Hector Razo said.

Fans of both teams packing bars early on Friday, and many of them were rocking some gear honoring Pope Leo. Sox fans took an early win there, embracing the fact that he is from the South Side and that's where his fandom lies too.

"That was wishful thinking by some of the Cubs fans, to be honest with you, the man is a South Sider. I imagine that's where his allegiances lie, which is great," Callahan said. "Everybody needs help these days, right?"

But fans of both teams are just happy Pope Leo is one of Chicago's very own.

"That was amazing it was truly a blessing for all the Chicagoans and we're all blessed to be here on a beautiful day," White Sox fan Joe Kelly.

The rivalry has lost some competitiveness in recent years.

"There's something about Wrigleyville the sun the temperatures this is the kickoff to summer," Cubs fan Tom Van Ness said.

The fans said this is a rivalry where records just don't matter, and they're here to enjoy baseball in Chicago.

"It brings out the best of Chicago," Razo said. "Everybody's united. Somebody roots for the North Side, somebody roots for the South Side, but at the end of the day, we're all together we're all here to have fun."

Alderman Bennet Lawson of the 44th Ward released the following statement about Thursday night's shooting:

"In public safety news, you may have heard about the shooting that occurred yesterday evening near Murphy's Bleachers in Wrigleyville... I have personally been in touch with both Murphy's Bleachers and the Superintendent of CPD. I am grateful to the police for their swift response and for their ongoing investigation.
The extensive public and private camera network in the Wrigley Field area will help ensure a clear understanding of the events and assist in preventing future incidents, and we plan to work closely with the State's Attorney's office if charges are brought forth. If you have any information, please submit an anonymous tip at cpdtip.com."
