No one was injured in that incident, which occurred near the intersection of Columbus and Balbo.
Officers were responding to reports of up to 25 vehicles doing donuts in the street when they encountered a black Chrysler 300 occupied by four to five people, according to police scanner traffic.
"There was a black Chrysler 300 occupied four to five. Female, Hispanic in the front seat as a passenger. Two of the individuals were seen with long guns," an officer said over the scanner.
Police said they deployed a tire deflation device in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but the Chrysler's driver bypassed it and drove toward an officer.
The officer then opened fire.
"Shots fired. He tried to hit me with his vehicle," an officer reported over the scanner.
The vehicle briefly got away before being stopped, and the driver was taken into custody.
The officer suffered a minor ankle injury and was treated and released from the hospital. No other injuries were reported.
Skid marks were visible at the intersection later in the day as visitors made their way into Grant Park, unaware of the early-morning incident.
Fourth Ward Ald. Lamont Robinson addressed the incident in a statement, saying, in part, "Street takeovers, reckless driving, and other unlawful acts have no place in our community. Those who choose to jeopardize public safety must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."
CPD's investigative Response Team is investigating. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is also investigating, and the officer involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days.

The incident was one of several violent episodes overnight across the city that left 14 people injured by gunfire and one person killed.

"Early this morning at about 4:15, I was notified of a serious incident involving the Chicago Police Department in the 4th Ward. I am grateful that no lives were lost and that the injured officer has been treated and released. My thoughts are with everyone impacted by this incident.
As Vice Chair of the City Council's Committee on Police and Fire, I take the safety and well-being of the brave men and women who serve our communities very seriously. Every officer deserves to return home safely at the end of their shift, just as every resident deserves to feel safe in their neighborhood.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is conducting an independent investigation, and it is important that we allow that process to move forward without speculation. My office will continue to cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and respect the integrity of the investigation.
Let me be clear: the 4th Ward will not tolerate reckless and dangerous behavior that endangers our residents, first responders, or law enforcement officers. Street takeovers, reckless driving, and other unlawful acts have no place in our community. Those who choose to jeopardize public safety must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
