The shooting took place at about 11:43 p.m. in the 2200-block of North Lincoln Avenue.
Police said a fight broke out near a bar and someone fired shots at a 30-year-old man.
The man was shot in the head and body and collapsed on a nearby sidewalk. He was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said. He was identified to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as Malik McCorkle.
A suspect was taken into custody and charges are pending, police said.
Marc Kramer who lives nearby was coming home when he saw large crowds outside a nightclub near Belden and Lincoln avenues.
He called the police, knowing a problem was imminent. Twenty minutes later, shots were fired.
"There were people on the street, in the middle of the street drunk, there was a crowd gathering," Kramer said. "I called the police and it's been a regular occurrence around here."
"There's people arguing in, and a couple minutes later that's when the fight broke out," neighbor Luis Jaime said.
Witnesses reported hearing at least a dozen gunshots.
Neighbors are getting fed up as this is the second shooting in this area the past few months.
In June, a 39-year-old woman was also shot just down the street on Belden. Alderman Timmy Knudsen said there would be additional patrols and stricter parking enforcement in the area after that shooting.
"The alderman is aware of it; police are aware of it and it's just gotten worse," Kramer said.
"At this point, I think some action needs to be taken," said John Lowe, who lives nearby. "I think our alderperson needs to start looking at pulling some liquor licenses."
Lowe has lived in the area for 30 years. He said some problem bars should have their licenses revoked, given the danger they're bringing to the neighborhood.
"Some of the bars and taverns around here are great," Lowe said. "They're really good and really responsible. Other ones, it's a problem."
"Causing crime, it's causing disturbances late at night. It's not conducive to the neighborhood," Kramer said.
ABC7 Chicago senior digital producer Lindsay Gloor said she heard the gunfire from her apartment nearby and also recorded video of the aftermath. She said recent violence in the neighborhood has left residents concerned.
"We love where we live but we feel unsafe with that establishment there," Gloor said.
On Monday, Knudsen said the latest shooting underscores the urgency of addressing ongoing concerns.
"Especially after what happened last night, a death in this corridor, we need to look at who needs to be shut down, should there be a direct nexus from a singular bar to the situation," Knudsen said.
The owners of the alleged business involved did not respond to requests for comment.
Some residents said the violence has left them uneasy despite the neighborhood's reputation.
"It's a nice neighborhood but things like this can make it look bad," Jaime said.
Alderman Knudsen said in a statement in part, "Since earlier this summer, my office has led an aggressive push for further restrictions on late night bars on this stretch of Lincoln Avenue. I am hopeful and confident that the Department of Business Affairs & Consumer Protection will view this homicide as sufficient evidence of the need to support specific restrictions on this stretch. Regularly, I speak to business owners on this stretch who agree that additional restrictions will benefit a corridor that has been refreshed with many great new storefronts. They are our partners in this work, as is the Chicago Police Department which has assured us that the 2200 block of Lincoln Avenue will receive additional patrol and a permanent patrol on weekend hours."
