The shooting occurred at about 2:24 a.m. in the 4200 block of Knox Avenue near Fort Knox Studios, Chicago police said.
A lot of what happened remains under investigation, but the shootings appears to have been an ambush. The owner of the business across the street told ABC7 his surveillance video shows the vehicle with the shooters parking in his lot around 40 minutes before a group of about five or six hooded men jumped out and started firing.
Police said the four victims were walking on the sidewalk when they were shot. Detectives were still on the scene early Thursday afternoon as they continued to investigate the overnight shooting.
Video from one of the hospitals a couple of the victims went to for treatment shows a black SUV riddled with bullet holes.
Two men, ages 24 and 25, were driven to Community First Hospital and later transferred to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition, police said.
Two other men, ages 20 and 24, were transported by the Chicago Fire Department to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where they were in good condition, police said.
Jeff Ulrich, who lives nearby, said he heard a barrage of gunfire early Thursday morning.
"About 2:30 this morning, all of the sudden I woke up and heard gunshots and it sounded like automatic machine guns or something going back and forth, probably about 20, 30 shots," Ulrich said. "It went on for a good five minutes or more."
Ulrich said he couldn't believe it at first.
"Just surprising for this area, very quiet," Ulrich said. "Other than the trains, there's not a whole lot going on back here."
According to the owner of Fort Knox, while the building was already closed at that time, one of his long-term tenants with overnight access was using one of the many recording studios inside at the time of the incident. The injured appear to have been among that tenant's guests, but he says, he does not know who they were or what exactly they were doing.
Area Five detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. No one is in custody, police said.
