Senior living resident among 5 injured in Bronzeville mass shooting; $5K reward for information

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A local activist is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in connection with Monday's South Side mass shooting.

The attack in broad daylight left five people injured, and on Tuesday, some nearby were nervous about being outside.

Chicago police held roll call at 43rd and Evans in the Bronzeville neighborhood, near the shooting scene, on Tuesday.

"If this was the Gold Coast and it was seniors shot up, I guaranteed you it would have been a different response," said Bronzeville resident Sandie Norman.

Norman lives nearby and works to prevent violence.

"That's a mass shooting in my neighborhood, and there's not an outcry an uproar and senior citizens are on the ground, bleeding," Norman said.

At least one of the five victims lives at the Judge Slater Apartments, a senior living building across the street from the shooting scene.

Police said a woman of an unknown age, shot in the leg, was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition.

A 72-year-old woman, shot in the shoulder, was taken to the same hospital in good condition.

Three men, a 35-year-old shot in the arm, a 44-year-old shot in the foot, and a 39-year-old in the arm, were taken to the same hospital in good condition.

"I think it's crazy. I think I heard gunshots and firecrackers, at the same time, it turns out to be gunshots," said Bronzeville resident Angelis Anderson.

The apartment complex is part of Chicago Housing Authority, and residents routinely come outside to relax and get fresh air.

"Can't even go outside, push their little things like I push, and get shot, and one of their birthdays today, that's sad," said Bronzeville resident Stephanie Watson.

A CHA statement reads, in part, "While this incident did not occur on CHA property, CHA's Resident Services team members have been on-site at the Judge Slater Senior Apartments to support residents and provide crisis counseling."

On Tuesday, counseling was also available at the King Health Center, which is operated by Chicago's Department of Family and Support Services. Some of the shooting victims were outside the King center when someone opened fire.

A department spokesperson shared a statement which says, in part, "DFSS and King Center staff remain committed to supporting the Bronzeville community and will continue to provide resources via the King Center during this difficult time."

Local activist Ja'Mal Green said he is now offering $5,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest and a conviction.

"We will not protect those who wreck havoc on our communities with no care for human life," Green said on social media.

No one is in custody, and Chicago police are investigating.

"This kind of stuff happens around here all the time, but this is the first time it happened over here," said Bronzeville resident John Horton.

Meanwhile, the open investigation is leaving some with an uneasy feeling in a neighborhood that so many have worked to transform.
