They were disturbed to find out a violent crime unfolded on their street early Monday morning.
Chicago police said a 20-year-old man was shot in the chest after he tried to help a woman being carjacked by four men at about 2:05 a.m.
"It's a quiet neighborhood, but things happen now. Things are out of control, so you have to make adjustments as you go," said neighbor Roy Williams.
Neighbors say the man shot is the carjacking victim's brother. He intervened when, police said, four men approached the woman, battered her and took her 2011 Volkswagen sedan.
Before fleeing, police said, one of the robbers shot the man in the chest.
One neighbor who wanted to stay anonymous said they heard a single gunshot and saw the victim lying on the ground. He was taken to Mount Sinai hospital in critical condition.
Brenda Massey lives near where the early morning carjacking unfolded.
"It means a lot to me. I love my neighbors. We all look out for each other. We're good community," Massey said.
Massey said she has lived in her North Linder home for the past 30 years. She says the early morning violence is certainly concerning.
"I go walking every morning, so this makes me nervous that something happened this close to my area," Massey said.
Police are searching for the suspect, and at this time, no one is in custody.
